Gaborone-based Air Botswana has announced plans to expand its fleet with the addition of three Embraer aircraft. CEO Lulu Rasebotsa revealed that this move is part of a strategic initiative to transform Botswana’s national airline. Additionally, the airline is considering acquiring a fourth aircraft.
“We have secured three fully paid-for aircraft and are actively seeking a fourth,” Rasebotsa stated.
These new aircraft will enhance the existing fleet, which currently includes one Embraer E-170 and two ATR 72-600 aircraft. These planes service routes between Gaborone, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Kasane, Maun, and Francistown. Rasebotsa emphasized that the older ATR aircraft will be retained to minimize flight delays.
“The new additions are all Embraer jets and the ATRs will remain in service to ensure we keep delays to a minimum,” she said.
Air Botswana is also planning to introduce new routes. The arrival of the new aircraft will enable the airline to expand its network. Rasebotsa mentioned that thorough research is being conducted to ensure the successful implementation of these new routes, aiming to meet customer needs and broaden Air Botswana’s market presence.
“The acquisition of the Embraer jets and the expansion of our routes are pivotal steps toward achieving financial stability and operational efficiency,” Rasebotsa added.
The state-owned airline has faced financial challenges for several years, struggling with low sales and high maintenance costs. Despite multiple attempts to privatize, efforts have been unsuccessful due to investor withdrawal or unfavourable terms.
Rasebotsa also highlighted that the addition of new aircraft would create job opportunities in Botswana’s aviation sector, including cabin crew, pilots, and other personnel positions.
In support of local entrepreneurship, Air Botswana has started offering locally-produced snacks on its flights. This initiative aims to promote local businesses and provide passengers with a taste of Botswana’s culinary offerings.
